Portrait of three young Roma (Gypsy) boys interned at Camp de Rivesaltes (also known as Camp Maréchal Joffre) in France. Initially built by the French as a military camp, at the start of World War II, the camp became a military transit base, and in 1940 a refuge for Spanish refugees fleeing the Franco dictatorship. After the German defeat and occupation of France and the setting up of the collaborationist Vichy government in the southern zone (zone libre), Camp de Rivesaltes gradually became an internment and transit camp for families of Roma (Gypsies), Jews and Spanish Republican refugees, whose ultimate destinations were the concentration camps in the East via Drancy transit camp.
