“Cornflower” Looks At How We Protect Each Other In Our Most Difficult Moments

How do you explain the unthinkable — and how do you explain it to a child? That is exactly that “Cornflower”, a stunning directorial debut from Sam Evoy, looks to capture. It deals with loss and grief in a profoundly realistic way, exploring how we talk around and navigate the most difficult moments.

“I chose to write and direct Cornflower because I wanted to start conversations about mental health,” Sam Evoy explains. “I wanted to explore loss, particularly death by suicide, in a way that did not place blame on the family members but rather looked at how people can come together in the moments that change us. My goal was to subtly tell a story about suicide, without exploiting the tragedy.“

The huge themes of grief, communication, family, and protection are handled with a delicate and expert touch — a very impressive debut from a budding young filmmaker.
