This has been QUITE the month! I have gorged on artwork to my heart’s content! Literally, immersed myself into every art event, exhibition and fair that I could.

I’m quite knackered from it all! But it was, as ever , so much fun 🙂

The highlight of this month has been meeting the talent themselves – the artists. I got to meet up & comers and veterans, traditional and avant-garde, from all parts of Africa.

And of them all, the icing on the cake was getting to meet the AMAZING Victor Ekpuk.

“The subject matter of my work deals with the human condition explained through themes that are both universal and specific: family, gender, politics, culture and identity ”

It was a bit of an embarrassing moment! I may have squealed like a groupie… I may have inundated him with a trillion questions… I may have spoken at a 1000miles an hour…. and I may have demanded a photo….

It was all worth it! (Me on the left!)
Victor Ekpuk’s work has taken the art world by storm. Since gaining his degree in fine and applied art from Obafemi Awolowo University (Ife, Nigeria) in 1989, he has exhibited his work at galleries in the UK, Nigeria, South Africa, The Netherlands, France and all over the USA including the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African Art (he is based in Washingon DC).

Victor’s work has a strong influence of Nsibidi – traditional Nigerian graphics and symbols that were used to communicate and convey ideas. These abstract signs are prominent in Victor’s work, and I love the way he uses an ancient form of communication to engage us via his modern and contemporary artwork.

He is visibly interested in African philosophies and aesthetics and his work is an exploration of consciousness and the enigmatic nature of the human condition, finding connections between the past, present and future.

He is an exciting and profound artist, you need only to meet the man himself and speak with him, or see his works to become an avid fan.

I recommend buying a piece of his work NOW. This is an artist that will most definitely be appreciating in value….
