A Young Boy Celebrates Liberation Day

Though he may be too young to fully grasp the gravity of what has happened, his smile says it all. Here you can see a young Dutch boy celebrating the liberation of the Netherlands by the Allied Forces on Liberation Day. Across Europe, these celebrations marked a triumph over evil.

Although his smile and the Dutch tricolour flag sash stand out, when you look more closely you can also see that he has a celebratory cigarette in hand. After the liberation in 1945, the celebration was commemorated every five years. From 1990, the day was made a national holiday — to be celebrated annually.
