Soldiers March Through The Streets After The Siege of Budapest
There is something incredibly endearing about the huge smiles mixed with the slightly dishevelled and tired looks on the faces of these soldiers — but they have good reason to be both ecstatic and exhausted. Here you can see Soviet soldiers as they march through Budapest following the defeat of Axis Hungarian and German troops in the Siege of Budapest.
It was no easy task, the 50-day-long encirclement of the city was part of the Budapest Offensive. It began on 26 December 1944 and the Axis forces surrendered the city on 13 February 1945. The moment was an important strategic victory, giving the Allies a boost in their push towards Berlin.
