A Woman And Her Daughters View What’s Left Of Their Home In Smolensk
So many photographs that capture the damage of war take place in the middle of the destruction — a wound, a bomb, a fire. But this image is different. This photo taken after the Second Battle of Smolensk is about what’s left behind.
Here you can see a Russian mother and her two daughters looking at their home turned to rubble. During the Summer-Autumn Campaign of 1943, the Soviets cleared German presence from the region.
Although technically it was a successful campaign — the area had been under German occupation since 1941 — looking at this image, its difficult to see the success of it.
Smolensk Oblast, Russia, Soviet Union.
September 1943.
