A Marine Hard At Work During The Second Battle Of Guam

There’s a quiet contemplation in this photo that is so different from many images of war. Here you can see A U.S. Marine aircraft engine mechanic as he works on a Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine during the Second Battle of Guam.

After the Japanese had successfully taken the island during the First Battle in 1941, the US sought its recapture in 1944. The battle only ran from July 21 to August 10. That short period saw a huge loss of life, with the Americans losing approximately 3,000 people and over 18,000 members of Japanese forces killed in action.
