Crowds Await The HMS Formidable, Carrying Loved Ones

There is so much emotion brewing in this crowd. The joy, the anticipation, the slight nervousness. Here you can see huge numbers of Australian families waiting to greet the Royal Navy’s HMS Formidable.

Waiting excitedly at the Circular Quay at Sydney Harbour, they were there to greet nearly 1,300 Australian ex-POWs of the Australian Army’s 8th Division coming home from Japanese internment. The soldiers aboard would have not only faced horrible conditions, but they had spent huge periods away from home. The people you see pictured would not have seen their partners, fathers, lovers, and friends in three or four years.
