How “Summer Girl” Sweeps You Away

When the sun is beating down, there’s nothing like a breezy pop hit to really bring summer to life — that’s exactly what HAIM offers with their new release of “Summer Girl”. The video, directed by HAIM favorite Paul Thomas Anderson, has the hot and bleary feel perfect for a summer hit.

And though the sax-inflected track has a definite upbeat feel, the themes of loyalty and dedication run through — giving it a slightly more serious edge. That’s because this breezy hit was actually inspired by some very real struggles.

“I started the song when I found out my partner had cancer,” Danielle said in a statement. “I was on tour and felt like I was trying to send positive energy his way almost telepathically. Whenever I would come home in between shows I wanted to be his sunshine – his summer when he was feeling dark. His hope when he was feeling hopeless.”

Sometimes, you can find joy in the most unusual and unexpected places. “Summer Girl” may have come from Danielle’s partner being in a dark place, but this summer sensation is all about shining a light.
