Halsey Gives A Brave And Moving Performance At The Women’s March

You may know singer-songwriter Halsey from her incredibly popular tracks like “Nightmare” and “Without Me”, but this tremendous video shows her in a whole new light. Instead of giving a traditional speech, she opted for something far more personal.

“I don’t really know how to do a speech unless it rhymes, so I’m gonna do a little poem for you guys,” she explained, before launching into her poem “A Story Like Mine”. Drawing from real life experiences, she talks about being 14 and going to Planned Parenthood with her friend who was raped by a man who worked in the after-school program, about her boyfriend forcing her to give him oral sex, and about performing while having a miscarriage.

The staggering insight she gives into some of the most difficult moments of her life is incredible, but the poem is still forward-looking and determined. The lines so perfectly encapsulate what it’s like to be a woman in the 21st century, whether you’re a famous pop star or just an average teenager.

It’s 2018 and I’ve realized nobody is safe long as she is alive
And every friend that I know has a story like mine
And the world tells me we should take it as a compliment
But then heroes like Ashley and Simone and Gabby, McKayla and Gaga, Rosario, Aly
Remind me this is the beginning, it is not the finale
And that’s why we’re here
And that’s why we rally

It’s an incredibly courageous thing to do — and a powerful performance. Halsey is using her platform to speak for all women. This poem may have been written in 2018, but it needs to be remembered — year after year.
