It’s a difficult photo to take in, but a unique moment to be caught on film. Here you can see Italian women as they join the Fascist Women’s Auxiliary Service (Servizio Ausiliario Femminile, or SAF) of the Italian Social Republic, which was a puppet state of Nazi Germany from 1943 until 1945. This photo of the Fascist Women’s Auxiliary Service was taken after changing allegiances has rocked the country. Italy ousted Benito Mussolini, while the Allies had liberated southern Italy. Germany then placed Mussolini as the head of the newly created Italian Social Republic in the north.
