This lesson is going to hit some of us hard. If you think that you’re a food connoisseur, you may be about to have a rude awakening. This VICE video goes right to an expert to find out how you should really be eating sushi — and the answer may surprise you. “Coming to you straight from the sushi chef’s mouth, MUNCHIES presents the dos and don’ts of eating sushi, as taught by Tokyo’s Naomichi Yasuda,” the video explains. “Be warned: You’ve been doing it wrong. Just remember: It’s okay to use your fingers to eat cut sushi rolls. Don’t combine ginger and sushi, or ginger and soy sauce. Ginger is a palate cleanser in between bites. When dipping sushi into soy sauce, dip fish-side down.” Yikes. And that’s just the beginning.

To get an in-depth lesson in the art of eating — a pretty delicious art, it has to be said — you can check out the whole video here

Next time you go out to eat, feel free to be empowered by a smug sense of superiority — knowing that you’re eating the right way. When you see someone reaching for the ginger, you might want to remind them it’s just a palate cleanser. Or you might not. This knowledge is yours, so deploy it wisely.
