This is a rare image, but such an important one. The clash of uniform and civilian dress is telling as this photo captures an American soldier leading German civilians from Weimar around the Buchenwald concentration camp. After the camp’s liberation, the forces were so upset and infuriarted by the way prisoners were forced to live that they marched the local civilians around the camp, hoping they would confront the reality of the horrors suffered. At the time,  many locals around Buchenwald said they had no awareness of what was going on in a place where over 230,000 people were incarcerated and over 50,000 died.
