While war might be the ultimate divider, it also, in certain moments, unites people from all over the world. Here you can see U.S. infantrymen of the 1st Infantry Division, French Resistance fighters, and French Colonial African sharpshooters who escaped from a German POW camp in La Ferté-Macé. After the liberation of Couterne, the men came together to talk, share, and examine each other’s weapons. Seeing the playful looks on their faces — the man on the right looks almost like a boy with a toy pistol — is more than slightly surreal when you remember what these men would have just been through.
