Talk about an all-star cast. Velvet Buzzsaw features Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, and John Malkovich — and the project is written and directed by Dan Gilroy. If the surreal and thrilling Netflix trailer is anything to go by, it’s sure to be something completely different. Set in the contemporary art world in Los Angeles, the varied cast of characters seem to collide in mind-bending ways.

“The idea that artists invest their souls in their work and it’s more than a commodity — that has always interested me,” Gilroy told Vanity Fair. “I suddenly saw a way of incorporating it all, to explore how, when art and commerce are dangerously out of balance, bad things can happen.” The result? A film that breaks the molds and keeps you on the edge of your seat, with Gyllenhaal in one of his strangest and most characterful roles to date.

Gilrow and Gyllenhaal already proved their collaborative street cred on Nightcrawler — and Velvet Buzzsaw looks poised to be just as weird and wonderful. If you’re ready to watch, you won’t have to wait long — you can catch it on Netflix from February 1st.
