Ari Aster’s writing and directing debut, Hereditary, has already made a splash at the Sundance film festival — and this trailer will show you why. A horror film Starring Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro, Hereditary takes a dark look at a family unravelling in the throes of grief. It’s being hailed as the most disturbing, most gripping horror films in years. And if horror isn’t normally your genre, don’t worry. The never-ending twists and genuine surprises will keep any viewer enthralled. “The screams in the theatre were almost as frightening as what was on screen,” Thrillist said.

And one of the most interesting things about this piece is that it seems to fall under an almost family-horror umbrella — looking at the way one generation affects the next. “When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry,” the synopsis reads. “The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.” And though the trailer seems to give you a lot of insight into the way the plot unfolds, rest assured they aren’t giving away any of the big surprises. Instead, it’s just wetting your palate for the series of horrors that will ensue. You can check out the trailer here:

Hereditary takes horror to a whole new place and promises to be a cross-genre smash hit. At the time of writing, it has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes — and critics and reviewers singing its praises. The Playlist’s Jordan Ruimy said that the film “feels like the culmination of the last 50 years of horror”, which pretty much says it all. If you’re ready to see it for yourself, sadly you’re going to have to wait until June 28th. But until then, you can keep watching the trailer — because that’s probably enough to keep you up at night.
