We often associate war with heat and sweat, but here you can see US Army infantrymen moving through snow on a recently cleared road. The forces are walking near Born in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, a landmark battle in World War II. The Battle of the Bulge is famous for being the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front, a surprise attack that the Allied forces were not prepared for. Caught off guard, the American forces suffered their highest casualties of any operation during the war — nearly 20,000 soldiers were killed. German troops also had significant casualties and were largely unable to replace their depleted numbers.
