If you want to see Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller really up the ante on their dramatic performances, you’re about to have the chance. The first trailer for Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is out— and it look like it’s going to be a winner. The Netflix film has already appeared at Cannes and fans are eager to see this family drama be released on October 13. The film also stars Dustin Hoffman as their difficult, failed-artist father, Elizabeth Marvel as their sister, and Emma Thompson as the father’s partner. With a case like that and Baumbach’s flare for intricate family relationships, it’s easy to see why this film is so hotly-tipped.
“Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is a funny and really enjoyable family comedy on classic lines with all the attendant pleasures of smart writing and ensemble casting,” the Guardian says. “It’s a tale of regrets and sibling rivalry and daddy issues and disappointment with life – leavened with late-flowering tenderness. It has something of Hannah and Her Sisters, naturally, or maybe Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections – and Baumbach’s work is a cousin to that of Rebecca Miller, who incidentally appears here in an acting role.”
Most of the video follows a song thought up by Sandler’s character, but you get some glimpses of the family dynamic and characters to come. You can check out the whole thing here:
There can never be too many good films exploring the nuisance, pain, and hilarity of family frustartions— and Baumbach is particularly adept at capturing all of the moving parts. You can see the film on Netflix from October 13th and it will also be released in select cinemas nationwide. Watching Stiller and Sandler stretch their serious-acting muscles with this all star cast will certainly be worth it.
