He looks so young. Here you can see a German paratrooper of the 3rd Parachute Division surrendering to Amercian troops in Belgium. Although it’s hard to understand why he looks so elated at being thrust among his enemies, he was not alone in his relief at surrendering to American troops. A large number of German paratroopers in his division ended up surrendering during the later stage of the Battle of the Bulge. Though it meant being taken into custody of his enemies, it also meant that the risk of death and horrific injury was now over.
