You can never have too much Mahershala Ali. The trailer for Green Book, a new film starring Ali and Viggo Mortensen, traces an unlikely pair of a pianist and his ruffian-come-bodyguard on tour in the deep south. “They must rely on the ‘Negro Motorist Green Book’ to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for blacks,” Variety explains. “Confronted with racism, danger — as well as unexpected humanity and humor — they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive.”

And even from the trailer, you can see that it’s packed with tough moments, funny moments, ambivalent moments, and more. It’s a film that plays with your perceptions and expectations, which is something that drew Ali to the project. “Green Book was a project that I kept thinking about after I had read it,” Ali told Entertainment Weekly. “If you look at these two archetypes [in films], it’s so often the black guy is serving as some sort of grounding force and reality check who’s coming from a low-income or working-class environment, for the wealthier, more affluent character. I really responded to the fact that it was flipped on its head the way that it was, and the fact that it was based on a real relationship.”
