Seeing some of this old-school technology in action can be totally jaw-dropping. Here you can see female English soldiers of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), using a searchlight near London as they scan the skies for German aircrews on bombing missions. Taken in the middle of January, the women are wrapped and layered to protect against the cold. While women’s contributions to the war are often overlooked, the ATS was formed on 9 September 1938 and lasted until l 1 February 1949, when it eventually merged into the Women’s Royal Army Corps. Over its time, it was full of thousands of women who were never scared to take on the challenge.
