The outpouring of emotion in this photo is almost too much to take in. Each face is a different iteration of passionate, uncontrollable grief. These Italian women are in mourning, at the funeral for 20 young people who were killed during the Four Days of Naples uprising, the Quattro giornate di Napoli. The battle took place September 1943, where Italians stood up against the German occupation. Many students — and some of the teachers — from Liceo Sannazaro secondary school were killed, less than a month before the arrival of the first Allied forces.
