With the entire world in a Star Wars spin, what better time to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at one of the most iconic characters? This video from Tested shows the making of the Chewbacca mask worn by Adam Savage— and gives you an idea of the sheer amount of work and detail that went into making it happen. “What’s underneath all that Wookiee fur?,” Tested asked. “We visit Tom Spina Designs, the workshop where Adam’s beautiful Chewbacca mask was crafted, to dive deep into the mask-making process. Adam and Tom walk through the many parts of Chewbacca, going over little-known details.”

And do they ever. This video packs in over 20 minutes of Star Wars trivia, from the fiberglass under-skull (yup, that’s a real thing) all the way to the finishing hairstyle touches. There’s a reason that Chewbacca looks so human and lifelike despite, well, being a wookiee. And it’s amazing to see the thought that goes into a mask that, if you didn’t know better, seems relatively straightforward. You may not have noticed the arch in his eyebrows or the fact that one side of his mouth is more active than the other or the layers and layers of materials used to allow movement, but it’s all part of what makes him a believable— and endearing— character in the movies. It’s part mechanics, part art, and all dedication.

Even down to the perfect blend of hair color (brown, red, grey, silver, and black), every aspect is considered thoughtfully and produced with integrity. So when you watch the movies, remember this is what went into one aspect of one character. When you think of it that way, then the films as a whole are positively mind-blowing.
