Details of the Downton Abbey Christmas special have been released this morning. The last-ever episode of the show will air this December, but the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
The recent end of the last series may have seen Lady Mary get her happy ending, marrying racingcar driver Henry Talbot, but poor Lady Edith was left heartbroken. Just as Bertie Pelham became the new Marquess of Hexham and Edith’s future looked even brighter, Lady Mary spitefully revealed that Marigold was her sister’s love child and off Bertie Pelham went.
The good news is that Pelham does return for the Christmas special, giving us all hope that there may be a reunion. He will be joined by his mother, played by Miranda’s Patricia Hodge, and the beautiful Alnwick Castle in Northumberland will act as the location for Brancaster, the family seat.
Lady Rose, played by the lovely Lily James, will also return to the show, with her husband Atticus and father Shrimpie in tow.
The final episode of the cult period drama promises continued themes of love and loss. Lady Mary will try to build bridges with her sister, Henry Talbot will struggle to find his place in the family and Carson will ‘face some personal challenges, which prove that even he is not invulnerable to change’. The episode will build up to a New Year’s Eve party to welcome in 1926. It will be the end of an era in every sense.
