GET YOUR TITS OUT LADIES!! The Lara Honnor Story

Just over a year ago, Lara Honnor was diagnosed with triple negative receptor breast cancer.

A day later, she decided to document her incredible journey in a video diary, and kicked it off with an emotional audio clip from the moment she was diagnosed.

She found the lump on her breast a few weeks before and the doctors had originally thought it was a cyst but then harsh reality hit. Lara had grade three cancer.

In the emotional audio clip, Lara tearfully tried to put her feelings into words: ‘The sh*t thing about this is telling people, I don’t want people to be upset.

‘I think about the fact that I haven’t found love, and I won’t.

‘I think about not being around to have children and a family. I’m thinking “f***, I might not be here in a year’s time”.’

Flash forward a year and following a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Lara is cancer-free and has shared her incredibly inspirational video in the hope that it will help other young women in a similar situation.

Lara told Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s amazing promoting and raising awareness about breast cancer with things like awareness months but it doesn’t really show the gruesome, brutal truth about what actually happens when you have breast cancer.

‘It’s a lot of poo, awful constipation and horribly embarrassing stuff, I mean my bum was busier than Piccadilly Circus!’

From F*** Cancer parties to painful life-threatening operations, Lara’s kick-ass approach to beating cancer is clear in her Get Your Tits Out video, which takes its name from her corresponding personal blog.

She hopes the video will help young people and make them realise that they’re not on their own.

MORE: Doctors could soon diagnose cancer using just a drop of blood

Lara said: ‘I was 31 when I was diagnosed and I would go to the breast cancer support group and I would be the youngest there by 20 years.

‘Everyone was warm and lovely and welcoming but I would feel incredibly isolated because these ladies had children, had a life. Not that I didn’t have a life but I was single, I’d never had children and had the potential of becoming infertile so I couldn’t really connect.’

‘So I want young women to see that sometimes you can have the worst day and barely be able to move but the next day you feel fine, that there’s also ups too.’

A powerful moment in the video is Lara admitting to viewers her heartache at the thought of never finding love.

She said: ‘I felt really sad because I’d been single for quite a few years and I was ready for a relationship. But London is not the easiest place to meet someone.

‘I’ve had relationships, but there was no chance I was going to meet someone in the middle of treatment.’

But through her traumatic journey was a shining light at the end of the tunnel, a completely unexpected light in the form of Michael from Brighton.

She said: ‘A mutual friend posted my blog on her Facebook in April and Mikey read my blog post and sent me a message. He’s got cystic fibrosis and he said that he wanted to tell me how much he loved my blog and that he knew how much I was going through.

‘When you have a life threatening illness, you kind of feel like you’re not on the same level as all the healthy people on Earth, but you’re not quite dead in heaven so you’re in the middle, you’re one step closer to death.

‘So he and I shared this connection of having a life threatening illness and shared an understanding of death.’

She added: ‘I was worried about meeting someone who wouldn’t understand, I would worry someone wouldn’t go near me because I was “damaged” goods. It’s really nice to find somebody that isn’t put off by all this.’

Lara is extremely passionate about the NHS as she believes it is down to them that her life was saved.

She said: ‘The treatment I received at King’s College Hospital in London was incredible, and that’s why I’m so devastated that the NHS is in such a vulnerable position. It’s already being privatised.’

She even made a Breaking Bad parody to make the point that if the government privatises the NHS, ‘we’re all going to end up making drugs to pay for our treatment like Walter White!’

Lara has since found a new lease of life and thinks that’s down to cancer.

‘It was so weird because cancer gave me a new found energy. I kind of felt invincible.

‘The feedback I’ve got from the film as well has been great. I was a bit worried it would be insensitive, and conjure up bad memories for people who have gone through it but so far so good. Everyone’s been really supportive.’

It has indeed been a whirlwind since finding out she had cancer last year and even though Lara has been given the all-clear, she never gets ‘too excited’ and never takes anything for granted.

She said: ‘It was the most bizarre experience having cancer. Every day was like Christmas. I would receive cards, presents, flowers, somebody would make me a CD compilation, my heart was going to burst with the love I received.

‘But it’s their support that carried me through. It’s actually hats off to my friends and family that I’m still here.’
